Digital Globes - from Virtual to Real
نویسنده
چکیده
Technological development at the end of the 20 Century opened a new gate for globes. In addition to the traditional analogue physical globes their digital counterparts evolved. Both globe representations are based on a threedimensional model of the real world. Because of increasing availability of global data visualization on a global level gains more significance. Therefore many software developers use the globe as an "interface" to large-scale data. The visualization of global data however is enormously dependent on the technological development both, on the software as on the hardware side. Triggered by the recent years progress in this area the realization of all categories of digital globes are within reach. So far some have only been theoretical.

Uav-based Augmented Monitoring – Real-time Georeferencing and Integration of Video Imagery with Virtual Globes
Over the last few years low-cost micro and mini UAV systems equipped with light-weight geosensors such as video cameras have started to appear on the market. These UAV systems are mostly instrumented with low quality INS/GPS sensors for position and attitude control. Over the same time period web-based interactive 3D geoinformation solutions have evolved into virtual globe technologies which ha...

متن کاملHyperglobes – The use of virtual reality globes in visualizing global phenomena
The roots of globe research in Austria date back to the early 1920s. Years of continuous scientific interest in the topic have lead to the fact that, at the end of the 20 century, Vienna ranks with the principal centres of globe research in Europe. While globe research, however, has concentrated on material (real) objects up to the late 1990s, the present study is the first to include immateria...
متن کاملBad Globes & Better Globes – Multilingual Categorization of Cartographic Concepts Exemplified by “map” and “globe” in English, German and Spanish
Whereas analogue globes have been mentioned in cartographic literature just marginally during the last decades, the term globe is enjoying increasing popularity when tagged as virtual and digital. However, every attempt to precise the concept of virtual/digital globes and to integrate these terms into existing typologies of cartographic representation forms faces us with various inconsistencies...
متن کاملReal-time raster projection for web maps
The virtual globe is the default visualization for Digital Earth applications, but it can only show one half of the Earth. This article introduces user-adjustable, on-the-fly projection of georeferenced raster images for web mapping and web GIS applications. This technique allows users to center a map on arbitrary locations, while still seeing the entire Earth surface. Modern web mapping librar...
